Basic information about solar rooftop systems

Types of solar roof top systems:

Solar power systems can be characterized into three types based on combinational use of solar modules, inverters and batteries.

OFF-Grid systems:

Off-grid systems are ideal for locations with no grid connectivity. These are systems with battery backup which are charged by the solar modules and then transferred onto the load.

Grid – tied systems:

Grid-tied systems are the most common in India as commercial establishments use solar power to augment grid power. Solar power being a reliable, cost efficient and money saving option in the long run. These systems are usually based on intelligent inverters which are self-regulating to augment grid power and are cheaper as there is no requirement for storage of power using batteries.

Hybrid systems:

This system can be divided into two portions with battery backup for essential applications which require uninterrupted power supply during late evenings when there is no solar power and during power cuts and other grid tied to augment grid power. This is an ideal system as it meets the requirement while being cost effective.

Solar power installation characteristics:

In India to maximize power production the system should be setup facing the geographical south while modules tilted at angle of 27-30 degrees with respect to land surface. Industrial sheds with slanting roof tops must have at least one side facing south to generate feasible power production.

Load bearing of structures:

The weight exerted by the solar power system is around around 8 kg’s per square meter hence roof has to be in good condition.

Area requirement:

A solar rooftop installation requires about 100 to 150 square feet per KW of solar installation based on technology of solar modules and type of rooftop.

Costing:

Solar power system installation costs about INR1.5 lakhs to 2 lakhs per KW based on systems with battery backup and without.

Operation & maintenance:

Solar power system is low maintenance. If the system has battery back-up then the batteries would require maintenance and replacement otherwise the only maintenance involved is cleaning of the solar modules which is also avoided by integrated self-cleaning system developed by hyquip.
